1998 – Helmut Lang referenced the original Levi’s 501xx for his iconic Painter jeans. The 501xx was first designed in 1890, but was constantly updated throughout the 20th century. Helmut specifically referenced Levi’s 1947 501XX model, which featured a traditional five-pocket design. One of Helmut’s most innovative qualities was utilizing references and masterfully elevating them to perfection. The ‘Painter Jean’ was first introduced in Spring of 1998 and has gone on to become one of the most popular and widely know style in the world of archive denim. Helmut played with numerous styles of paint splatters, some garments heavily inundated, others – like this pair – simply had a couple splatters of paint. Regardless of the amount of paint used on any individual pair, the ‘Painter Jean’ actually refers to the fit as well as the style. This pair specifically features the same 5 – Pocket style and slim straight legs as every other pair of Painters. This pair is particularly beautiful because it features black and green rubberized paint across the front and the back. The paint sits perfectly on top of the light wash of the denim.
