Helmut Lang’s Fall 1997 collection came the year before the designer moved his studio from Vienna to New York; however many of the details set the foundation for some of Lang’s most iconic garments. Probably the most famous from the collection is the standard Levi’s Trucker style jacket, with red paint across the back, worn by Raf Simons during the 2000s. The menswear collection from this time period focused on elegant denims, some adorned with singular stripes of rubberized paint, corresponding with the denim jackets. Other trousers had silk for the waistband. By this time, Lang was already a master of material, mixing and matching to perfection. These pants are constructed of wool, with the band of rubberized pant across the front and the back. The fit is slim throughout the entirety of the leg. The rubber paint splatter beautifully juxtaposes the richness of the black wool. Very rare and in wonderful condition.
